Forest of Reading Festival, Toronto

Posted: A little late...

I am finally getting around to writing about the Silver Birch Festival that took place in Toronto on May 15, 2014. What an awesome day! Once again, I had the chance to meet so many kids who can't get enough of reading. And all the kind things they had to say about my book were overwhelming! There's nothing like having a reader excitedly rhyme off his or her favourite parts of your book to you. (You mean you actually read it?!!) Or have a reader ask you to sign a copy of your book for them. (Seriously?)

The Silver Birch ceremony was a great time. I loved meeting the other authors whose books had been nominated. (Congratulations to Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch, whose book took home the award.) I was lucky enough to be onstage alongside Karen Levine. Her book, Hana's Suitcase, was awarded the Ultimate Silver Birch Book for the festival's 20th anniversary.
And what an incredible honour to be on the same stage as Hana's brother, George Brady.

My two kids came along to this festival, as well. (That makes me so happy.) And, lo and behold, when I looked out from the stage during the ceremony, I caught a glimpse of my best friend of over 30 years sitting amongst the readers. She'd come down to T.O. to support me. Surprise! So very touching. (Thank you, Michelle.) I also saw--and heard--many of the staff from Owlkids Books in the audience, including my editor for Weird Sports. It was a fantastic experience. And one that I'll never forget.

The 2014 Silver Birch Non-Fiction nominees. What an honour!

That's me at the mic speaking to the audience. (Can you see my knees knocking?)

Another sign. And another parade. I could get used to this!

Up on stage...with a big smile for my kids.
